Hunter Ranch is a pretty nice golf course.  There are a couple of holes that I don't care for, but overall it is a pretty good track.  The course is relatively flat with some water and a few forced carries over barrancas.  The course is always in good shape.  Greens are fairly big and roll true.

This is another course that was on my "I should play" list but I couldn't because it used to be private.  It never received much play and went into disrepair, being called Paso Robles' Goat Track for quite some time.  Then it was sold to new owners and the new owners saw the potential of the course They plunked a lot of money into restoring the course and now it is a gem.  There are some good holes and the course is basically flat with many mature oaks.  Fairways were pretty generous and the greens putted wellnot to mention they were in great shape.  Kudos go out to Mike Brabenec and Mike Bremer for doing a great job of putting the luster back on this jewel. Check out the YouTube video featuring the course.

Dairy Creek is a hilly kind of "Links Style" golf course which I have played many times.  There is some bad news though.  The course has water problems which has facilitated the course to close the front nine so now it is only a 9 hole course.  I am truly disappointed in this turn of events, but the action to close the front nine was inevitable. For me, Dairy Creek will be just a pleasant memory.  I'll miss you Dairy Creek.

This golf course is not right on the Pacific Ocean, but its close.  The course is built on the side of the hill so bring your best uphill/downhill/sidehill game.  Don't worry though about bunkers because there are only six of them on the whole course. Make sure to keep your wits about you because these greens will make you talk to yourself. Is that uphill putt really uphill?  You are going to have to just figure it out yourself.  This course is a lot of fun to play and even if you are not playing well and the greens have got you talking to yourself-they cause this with many golfers who play the course-the views of Morro Rock, Morro Bay and The Pacific Ocean will make you glad you are putting up with this ordeal.  All kidding aside though, it is a fun course and is always in the best of shape.  Check out our YouTube Video of San Luis Obispo County as well.

There are two distinct nines on the course.  The front nine winds around the hills above the Avila Beach area and has some interesting holes.  My favorite is the fourth hole in which you need to have an accurate tee shot with the fairway taking an abrupt left turn up a hill.  Don't hit it too far right because you will be in a creek on the right.  The back nine is flat with a creek running through it which comes into play on a couple of holes.  The 11th hole is interesting in that you must shoot though a cut in the mountain that was once a railway bed.  To be frank, I am not 100% sold on this course and it is not my favorite.  Its fun, but what can I say.

I don't get to play this golf course much and that is a shame.  This Peter Jacobsen designed course rates high on my list of favorite courses.  The course is hilly in spots but fair and pleasant to play.  I love the par threes.  Fairways are fairly wide and forgiving and the greens are fast.   As you probably can imagine, the course is always in fantastic shape and well manicures.  The course is challenging and bring your "A" Game.

I will start with the positive.  This is a beautiful course.  However, I am not going to say much about it because it tops the list of my least favorite courses in the world.  Growing up I was taught that if you can't say something good about something, don't say anything.  Let's leave it at that.  My emotions about this course run high, so I won't share them.  I will say that there are two courses here, the Main course and a twelve hole "challenge" course.  I have not played the challenge course but I understand it is a lot of fun.  I have played the main course three, each time hoping to like it.  Needless to say it hasn't happened yet.  I'll play Morro Bay or Cypress Ridge thank you very much.

I really didn't want to play Santa Barbara Golf Course.  I was on assignment for the magazine I was writing for and wanted to play and write about either Sandpiper or Glen Abbie.  That was not to be, but I didn't want to play another darn muni, especially one I knew nothing about.  I bit the dust anyway and made a time at Santa Barbara.  OK, so I was wrong about the course.  This course was in great shape, had a challenging layout and was a lot of fun to play.  What a surprise. I don't remember much of it but I do remember that I enjoyed playing it and would come back again.

If you like roller coaster rides, this is the course for you.  You have ups, and you have downs.  This course is hilly and you must hit your spots in the fairway in order to score well. Do you love water?  There is that for you too.  I don't want to give the impression that the course is unfair, but it is a course that you must play at least once in order to score well.  Hold onto your hats, the fun starts at the 303 yard par 4.  Its a steep downhill slope with the hole at the bottom of the hill.  Sounds easy, right? Oh yah, there is a lake at the bottom of the hill in the potential landing area.

Trust me, at the end of 18 you will be talking to yourself.  With that said, it was a fun course to play.  The greens were fast and as I said, it was a thinking man's course. I would recommend the course, but don't expect to score well just sit back and enjoy the ride.  By the way, the views of the Santa Barbara area and Pacific Ocean will take your breath away.  That alone is worth the course.

Do you remember the song "Windy"?  One of the lines from the song is "Everyone knows its Windy".  Well if you have played this course, everyone knows its windy, quite windy.  That's ok though because that is what makes this course so much fun and a bit more difficult than it looks.  Its basically a flat course but there is a river that does come through it and comes into play on a couple of holes. The ninth hole is an interesting par 3 that plays over a creek.  The 17th hole is their signature hole and is a par 3 that you must carry a lake. The course was in great shape when we played it and the greens were big and slightly undulating. The course has a tendency to play long because of the wind. I liked this course.
